When to Prune Xylosma Hedge
> B. Baker
Hedge pruning should be done in January or February. But that’s a lot of wood to remove at a single pruning without permanently altering the shape of the plant. One approach would be to remove about ¼ of the growth for several successive years, then when the after it is reduced to the desired size, prune continuously to maintain the desired size and shape size. See UofA Pub., “AZ1499 Pruning Shrubs in the Low and Mid-Elevation Desert in Arizona,“ at http://cals.arizona.edu/pubs/garden/az1139.pdf
for the UofA’s pruning recommendations.
