number of game wins. The only positional ties which need resolving are
those to ensure that there are four qualifiers from each block and
these are done through play offs. Tie breaks using net points or who
beat whom etc are not used.
I thought it would be interesting to see how many times in recent
World Championships there have been clear finishing positions, ie 1, 2
,3 4 without any need for any sort of tie break.
Each block contains 10 players and so each player has 9 games.
In the three World Championship since 2005 there have been 24 blocks
and only once has there been a clear 1, 2, 3, 4
10 of the 24 blocks have had a clear block winner, so in more than
half the blocks there has not been a clear winner. In one block in
2005 there was a six way tie for first place.
Clear first 10 out of 24
Clear second 5 out of 24
Clear third 6 out of 24
Clear fourth 8 out of 24
Clear position 29 out of 96.
Two tied for first place 10 out of 24
Three tied for first place 3 out of 24
Six tied for first place 1 out of 24
In 11 of the 24 blocks play offs have been required to decide on the qualifiers.
