Greetings,

The labs.metacarta.com free tile server, used by the openlayers.org
front page and examples among many other things, has been down for a few
days now. Is it coming back up, and is it time for OpenLayers to start
hosting its own server? I'd be happy to chip in to keep it running.

Cheers,
-jani

Hi,

the examples have already been updated to use the new tileserver location, http://vmap0.tiles.osgeo.org/wms/vmap0

Regards,
Andreas.

Brilliant, thanks! And since I was looking for one these earlier,
here's a Blue Marble tile server from OpenGeo:

var jpl_wms = new OpenLayers.Layer.WMS("Geographical (OpenGeo)",

"http://maps.opengeo.org/geowebcache/service/wms?TILED=true&",
{layers: 'bluemarble'});

Not as high resolution as JPL's old one, alas, but pretty nice nonetheless.

Cheers,
-jani

This server is no longer used by the examples. The data on this server has been moved to osgeo: tilecache and the "raw" wms both have new URLs, which you can pull from the examples. I'll update the homepage accordingly later today.

I believe that the labs server being down is actually a mistake on the part of the new hosts of that machine, but since the ownership is no longer at all in the control of anyone from the OpenLayers project, you're best off switching.

If you have funds you can donate to support this effort, OSGeo is the right place to sene them. If you'd like to support the OpenLayers project directly, check out our Sponsorship program.

Do the maps on spatialreference.org also need updating to refer to the new URLs?

The base layer on those maps appear not to be showing. eg. http://spatialreference.org/ref/epsg/28355/
